Chapped heels are foot problems that are often experienced by everyone. Chapped heels often make people less confident. What’s more for women who prefer to use sandals or open shoes when traveling.
How to prevent chapped heels
Although chapped heels are not a serious health problem, sometimes they can cause pain when walking. You can prevent this from happening with some of these treatments.
1. Wear moisturizer
After bathing or soaking your feet, apply a moisturizer to your heels to keep your feet skin moist. Use moisturizers in the form of creams or ointments because they are more effective than lotions.
For those of you who have dry skin. An association of dermatologists in the United States (American Academy of Dermatology, AAD) suggests. So you apply a moisturizing ointment or cream containing oil or shea butter.
In addition, AAD also recommends choosing moisturizers that contain the following ingredients to soothe dry skin. Among them: Lactic acid, Urea, Haluronic acid, Glycerine, Dematics, Lanolin,Petroleum jelly, and Mineral oil.
2. Avoid products that make irritation
Avoid using soap or hard and fragrant skin care products. Although it’s important to keep your heels clean, moist and free of infection. Soap made from hard can make the skin drier.
Lightweight products are more effective for keeping moisture from the heel skin. In addition, skin care products containing fragrances, alcohol, retinoids or alpha hydroxy acids are sometimes too hard. And make the skin dry and sensitive.
3. Wear the right shoes
Wear shoes with closed heels to prevent cracking of the skin on the back of the foot. Shoes with closed heels and soft pads will protect your heels. Besides that, wear shoes that fit right on your feet.
You should also use cotton socks to help reduce friction which can cause the skin to crack. Cotton socks can also absorb sweat and moisture, allow the skin to breathe, and help prevent skin from drying out.
4. Rub heels with pumice stone
Use pumice to rub your heels after bathing. Do it several times a week to help prevent skin thickening.
However, avoid removing calluses yourself if you have diabetes or neuropathy. This can cause injury and increase the risk of infection without your realizing it.
